THE RESORT

Introduction

Shiga Kogen is not just a ski resort — it's a complete winter escape, blending Japan's alpine wilderness, traditional culture, soothing hot springs, comforting food, and exceptional snow.

Shiga Kogen, nestled deep within the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, is one of Japan's most impressive high-altitude ski regions. Known for its dry, reliable powder, peaceful atmosphere, and vast interconnected terrain, it offers a uniquely serene snow experience. Unlike the busier international resorts, Shiga Kogen maintains a more traditional, nature-focused charm — ryokans with hot spring baths, quiet slopes, and sweeping mountain scenery that feels untouched and authentically Japanese.

Visitors are welcomed with a distinctly Japanese-style mountain culture. Instead of large commercial villages, Shiga Kogen offers cosy ski-in/ski-out hotels, family-run inns, and ryokans with steaming natural onsens — the perfect way to unwind after a day on the slopes. The atmosphere is relaxed and intimate, making it ideal for families, couples, and travellers who value authenticity and nature over nightlife and crowds.

Dining in Shiga Kogen reflects the region's comforting, warm-hearted character. Many hotels include half-board meals featuring local Nagano specialties — hearty hot pots, kaiseki-style dinners, mountain vegetables, miso-based soups, freshly prepared ramen, warming curries, and homestyle Japanese dishes crafted for cold winter evenings.

THE EXPERIENCE

Why Shiga Kogen?

Japan's largest connected ski domain. Reliable dry powder. Traditional Japanese culture. And not a crowd in sight.

Japan's Largest Connected Ski Domain

With 18 individual ski areas linked by lifts and trails, Shiga Kogen is one of the biggest interconnected ski domains in Japan. Roam freely across wide groomers, steep pitches, and high-altitude powder fields on a single lift pass.

Reliable Dry Powder

High altitude (base ~1,340m, summit 2,307m) means consistently cold temperatures and dry, light powder. Annual snowfall averages 8–12 metres, with the season running from December through May.

Traditional Japanese Culture

Experience ryokans with natural hot spring baths, kaiseki dining, tatami rooms, and the warmth of Japanese hospitality. Nearby Shibu Onsen and Yudanaka offer centuries-old bathhouses, lantern-lit streets, and traditional eateries.

Quiet & Uncrowded

Shiga Kogen is a nature-focused escape — not a party resort. Short lift lines, peaceful slopes, and a relaxed atmosphere make it perfect for families, couples, and travellers seeking authenticity over crowds.

Family-Friendly

English-speaking ski schools, dedicated kids' snow parks, gentle beginner slopes at Sun Valley and Ichinose, and family-oriented hotels make Shiga Kogen welcoming for all ages.

Snow Monkeys Nearby

Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park — where wild Japanese macaques bathe in steaming hot springs — is just 15–20 minutes from Shiga Kogen's base. An unforgettable experience for all visitors.
